Longing For The Sea

"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."
-Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Terminology

Importance of Terminology
-Terminology is naming a play situation concept detail that you can train in practice and execute in the game. The more terms a team has, the better the results. The great coaches can recognize a concept, name it, train it, then execute during the game. These special details add up to victory.

The Climb

"Eveyone wants to get to the top.
No one wants to climb."

I Had Not Lived?

Success Unexpected

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours…”-Henry David Thoreau

True Joy

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote to making you happy.  I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.  I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live.  I rejoice in life for its own sake.  Life is no brief candle to me.  It is a sort of splendid torch which I have a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it over to future generations.”  -George Bernard Shaw

On Commitment

All The Miles
  • “Commitment?  It was commitment. Total commitment. I could travel light years toward my goal but if I stopped an inch short of it, all the miles would be useless.

Test Your Players

"A player that cannot be tested is a player that cannot be trusted."

It is important to test your players in practice and in the big games.  The best will always rise to the top and will manage the pressure of the big game situations.  Every player wants to be noticed, but not every player wants to be watched.  If the player has been raised on "nice try" expectations and standards they will shrink under the demands of the toughest games.  And these players will get you beat.  Coaches must be on the look out for these players.  We are looking for players who thrive in hostile environments and who are comfortable being unconfortable.  Do not compromise on this.  An entire season will come crashing to an end if the wrong players are on the field at the wrong time.  And the players you do trust will never forgive you for this...

Controlling The Game

"Coaching is controlling the game."
Sir Alex Fergesun

A great coach has the ability to take control of the game.  By taking away the other team and by putting their players into a position to win.  The fun starts when a coach is able to do this. No longer does it come down to the talent on the team. A coach with a great strategy can influence the game.  And that is the essence of coaching.
